Tokyo-based Chinese artist Dian held his first solo exhibition, Kaiju Shojo, at AKA Automotive Arts in Taipei, bringing into physical space the strange world he has built within himself since childhood.
In this exhibition, Dian depicts two presences: the mysterious “kaiju” and the angelic “girl.” These strongly contrasting forms symbolize the duality of the soul, unbound by gender, time, or space, as well as an immeasurable inner energy.
Through painting, Dian visualizes the inner power hidden beneath the surface and invites viewers into a fantastical world where light and darkness intersect. It is also a journey into an unknown yet powerful abyss deep within the subconscious.
The exhibition centers on large-scale works from the new Kaiju Shojo series created for this show. They depict an adventure of a trinitarian self, where light and darkness separate into an angel whose heart is pierced by a sacred sword and a shadow in the form of a cat, before eventually merging again into a single being.
Kaiju-like figures reminiscent of tokusatsu characters also appear, including the all-seeing Tengan Kaiju and the Fire-Biting Dragon, which clenches the flames of its own anger. These kaiju are both inhabitants of Dian’s unique worldview and a method through which the artist explores and understands the world.
The titles of the works draw inspiration from music Dian has listened to, while also incorporating homages to memorable scenes from science fiction films.
A large-scale sculptural work, the World Tower, derived from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, is also exhibited. Its structure, in which a kaiju summoner calls companions from another world, resembles a device connecting the universe within a person to the vast cosmos outside.
