Yuma Ishii is a dye artist born in 2001 in Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan. He is currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Fine Arts and Crafts at Kanazawa College of Art, specializing in crafts with a focus on dyeing. Grounded in traditional Yuzen dyeing techniques, Ishii explores themes such as how we relate to the world we live in today, as well as his own sensory perceptions and ways of seeing. Rather than simply inheriting historical methods, he recontextualizes them within contemporary life, allowing personal experience and reflection to shape his work. His practice highlights subtle sensations and questions that often go unnoticed in everyday life. Through dyeing, Ishii creates a quiet tension between tradition and the present, technique and perspective, individuality and society. Ishii has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the EGK KOGEI AWARD Kanazawa Energy Prize, A-TOM ART AWARD 2023 Toyama Prize, and the Van Cleef & Arpels Design Scholarship. He is recognized as one of the promising next-generation artists in contemporary craft.
