Yuji UENO

Ikebana Artist / Artist

Born in 1967 in Kyoto Prefecture, raised in Kagoshima.

Based in Tokyo.


In 1986, he encountered the avant-garde ikebana works of Hiroshi Teshigahara, which led him to begin studying the art of flower arrangement.


In addition to presenting works in exhibitions across Japan, he has also engaged in creative activities in outdoor environments such as Bali and post-fire sites, as well as producing art for various events.


Since 2005, he has been performing live “hanaike” (flower arrangement performances) at Gallery Maki in Tokyo.


By reading the flow of the land and carefully selecting objects and floral materials, he has continued to build a unique world of “hanaike.” The unpredictable development of his work—repeating cycles of creation and destruction—has garnered passionate support from a wide range of fields.


Since the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, he has organized the flower battle entertainment event “Hanaike Battle,” and he continues to participate as an active battler.


He has participated in numerous art festivals throughout Japan and has collaborated extensively with artists from other genres.
