Yu Maeda (前田裕)

Sculptor and Painter

Yu Maeda was born in 1984 in Kumamoto, Japan. After graduating from the Department of Design at Kyoto Seika University, he worked as a freelance creator producing animation for commercials and music videos. In 2013, he relocated to Southern California and began his career as a painter. His work has been featured in international art magazines such as Hi-Fructose and Juxtapoz. In 2019, he held a solo exhibition at Superchief Gallery in Los Angeles. Since returning to Japan in 2020, he has continued to present his work both domestically and internationally. Maeda’s practice centers on reinterpreting the meanings humans have assigned to living beings through myths and fables. By reconstructing these narratives through his own use of color and form, he embraces the complexity of ecosystems and respects the aspects of nature that remain unknowable. Working across both two-dimensional and sculptural forms, Yu Maeda quietly reexamines the relationship between humans and other forms of life, offering images that balance imagination, symbolism, and ecological awareness.
