辻修平 (Shuhei Tsuji)

Visual Artist

Born in Adachi, Tokyo.

After graduating from local elementary and junior high schools, he went on to Tokai University Takanawadai High School—partly because he was reasonably good at studying. During high school, however, academics took a back seat to archery and art classes, which fully captured his attention.

He proceeded to enroll at Tokai University without much thought, but the former city boy—accustomed to a high school in the heart of Tokyo—quickly realized that commuting nearly three hours each way was unsustainable. He dropped out after one year. Remembering that he was good at drawing, he decided to aim for Tokyo University of the Arts, applying three times and failing each attempt.

In April 2000, amid these twists and turns, he opened Sengoku Gallery on the former site of his maternal grandmother’s tofu shop. From August 2012 onward, he has continued to create works at Asakura Gallery, located in his paternal grandmother’s home—an art space, atelier, and residence centered on the concepts of pink, cuteness, and poison. Thus, he became a painter thoroughly captivated by the color pink, producing work day after day.
