Miyazaki Hogyoku is a Japanese avant-garde female calligrapher, born in 1954 in Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture.


Avant-garde calligraphy is a relatively modern branch that emerged from traditional Japanese calligraphy. In the postwar period, influenced by Western abstract expressionist painting, a number of calligraphers began to seek innovation beyond classical forms. Through movements such as the Few-Character School and the Bokushō-ha (Ink Abstraction School), avant-garde calligraphy gradually developed into its contemporary form.


Miyazaki began studying calligraphy at the age of ten under Hōsen Hamatani, a fellow calligrapher from Toyama. At nineteen, upon entering university, she committed herself fully to the path of avant-garde calligraphy. Her encounter with calligraphy was profoundly shaped by her teacher’s passion for oracle bone script and the inscriptions of the Longmen Grottoes from China’s Northern Wei dynasty, whose powerful sense of “bone strength” (kotsuryoku) deeply influenced her sensibility.


Throughout a career spanning more than fifty years, Miyazaki has never ceased to question, experiment, and search for her own evolving style. Through continuous trial and error, she discovered a unique type of fusuma paper composed of small square units, a material resistant to absorbing ink. When ink flows across its surface, it produces an effect reminiscent of LED light emitting from within the paper, creating the illusion that a virtual world has entered an analog grotto formed by brush and ink.

Guided by this principle inherited from calligraphers she deeply respects, Miyazaki has devoted herself to the daily pursuit of the divine presence that emerges between her hand and the ink. Since the age of ten, she has received numerous awards, including the Members’ Prize at the Mainichi Shodō Exhibition organized by The Mainichi Newspapers, as well as the Prefectural Exhibition Prize at the Toyama Prefectural Art Exhibition.
