Yet when they were born, there was only one of them. Yami was kind and cute, but in order to possess all the love in the world, she ate her younger sister, Yamu. Yamu’s soul did not disappear; she hurt what Yami loved and tore open her stomach to eat small animals. Little by little, Yamu invaded Yami’s heart.

“Why does Yami get to possess everything in the world? Why did I have to be eaten?” She screamed with resentment, closing her eyes. “See? The true face of the young lady loved by everyone is this ugly.”

Yami ran. As she ran, she pierced her right eye with a nail, crying, “Stop, please stop!” and eventually disappeared deep into the forest. Now Yami and Yamu share one body. Yami’s right eye is crushed by the nail, and Yamu’s eye has become vacant and no longer shines.

Through this work, I want to convey that people can be reborn many times at different stages of life. Whatever form we are born into, and whatever we become afterward, there are moments when a new self is born through accumulated experience. I believe that self is a little more grown and a little better than before. I hope that I, too, and all of you will encounter new selves throughout life and continue forward in a better direction.

[SOMSOC ART SHOW 2026]
SOMSOC ART SHOW is an annual art event presented by SOMSOC GALLERY.
It creates new encounters and exchanges through art, offering a space where anyone can experience works freely and intuitively.

This year’s theme is “One Artist, One Character.”
Each artist condenses a character representing their current practice and world into a single A4-sized work.
Whether a figure, abstract symbol, or embodiment of spirit, each character is a small universe reflecting the artist’s aesthetics and ideas.
Diverse expressions converge in Harajuku, where distinct worlds intersect.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0780/9348/4245/files/1_736caffd-bc19-4fc0-8b75-f29734b857bd.png?v=1793950928
